Growing Vegetables: How We Are Planning Our Garden This Year

In this post I plan to share with you our backyard garden plans. As well as, the importance of why we are taking our gardening seriously this year growing vegetables.

Planning a Vegtable Garden

Our Gardening Plans

Planning a garden can be a very confusing and daunting task. Especially, if you’ve never grown a garden before. I am by no means a gardening expert. However, being the daughter of a landscaper/landscape designer and having grown up helping in our greenhouse doing TONS of seed starting, I do have a handful of knowledge to spare and to use on our garden this year growing vegetables.

Growing Vegetables From Seed

This year my husband and I decided to really focus on growing a garden and building our skills in this area. After, what happened last year with the pandemic and food shortage, we realized we relied way too much on the food chain grocery stores to supply us with our family’s food. We decided we need to truly build confidence in our self sufficiency of growing our own food. As well as, preparing ourselves for the future, and spontaneous events that may occur.

Planning a Vegetable Garden

This may sound a little too “prepper” for some people, and I get it. But after witnessing a random year like 2020, you start to look at life a bit differently and realize you have to carry your own family’s load. Which is why we have placed in imporance of growing vegetables this year since they are a huge staple in our family’s diet. We also plan to begin our journey in learning home canning and preserving.

Growing Vegetables in Our Backyard

We currently live on a military base in this season of life, and unfortunately that brings super small backyards. My husband and I dream of homesteading and doing all the things. However, we have been racking our brains for the last few months on how we will fully utilize the space provided with our home. Thankfully, we have a large garden bed on the side of our house that gets full sun, we plan to utilize for raised beds in growing vegetables. Our front garden bed, we will most likely plant flowers or vegetable plants that could easily serve as landscaping.

Selecting Our Seeds

Baker Creek Seeds: growing vegetables

I have heard so many great things about Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and so of course I had to pick up a few from our local nursery. I think the importance of quality vegetable seeds is huge. Whether you’re choosing organic, heirloom, non-organic, choosing a good seed company aids to your benefit when growing your garden and your gardening success. We are currently beginning the process of starting our seeds indoors, to transplant into the ground come spring.

Furthermore, I personally think its important and want to invest in owning a few heirloom quality seeds. Especially, because I want to be prepared for the future and my family’s food/seed storage.

Well those are so far our plans for growing vegetables and starting a garden this year. I hope they gave you some simple ideas for your garden this year. Like I said, I’m no expert but hopefully this post inspired you! Check out my previous post here.
