In this post, I share with you a list of my favorite things I love to shop for at thrift stores. If you know me well, then you know thrifting is my second love language. So stick around and I will share with you my top 7 favorite thrift store finds for a cozy home.
My Top 7 Favorite Thrift Store Finds
I’m the type of girl who usually has a mental list of things I want to find at a thrift store. Being a girl who also loves all things vintage and antique, shopping for the same things everytime usually makes it pretty easy to find what I’m looking for. I also stick to pretty basic categories when thrifting: brass candlesticks, vintage cookbooks, vintage art, etc… most of it falls under vintage or antique. So if you are a lover of thrifted old things, then this post is for you. Here are my top 7 favorite thrift store finds:
1. Old Canning Jars and Lids
I recently discovered a love for storing dry pantry goods in old canning jars. If you follow me on Instagram @ellinora_hurst then you probably saw my vintage Ball canning jar “loot” I found in an old barn, on the property where my mom rents her home. I literally hit the jack pot on all the vintage canning jars. I of course, cleaned them up and brought them back to Illinois, where I now store all of our dried goods.
Which makes that probably one of my top favorite thrift store finds. You can never go wrong with old vintage canning jars. I also love to look for the zinc top lids to go with them. You can usually find these lids at antique stores for $1 or so.
2. Vintage Cookbooks
Being a minimalist, I don’t usually buy cookbooks. I litterally only own these three pictured above, and that is because I have fallen in love with vintage/old cookbooks. I love the simplicity of the recipes, and the character they have. There are usually little handwritten notes inside from homemakers of the past.
Old cookbooks tell a story and they definately are one I want to be apart of when cooking. You can almost always find vintage cookbooks at thrift stores and they are one of my favorite thrift store finds to take home and display.
3. Old Quilts
My next favorite thing to hunt for at the thrift store, is old quilts. To be honest I have yet to find a quilt I love at a thrift store. The one above, I found at an antique store for $20! I know right?! The reason I decided to add “Old Quilts” to the list, is because its something I always hunt for. You can almost always find quilts at thrift stores, but finding one that speaks to your old granny soul, is a diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered. So next time your in the thrift store, check the blanket section and maybe you’ll find your next treasure.
4. Wooden Toys
Okay, I know there is a stigma with being a mom who loves wooden toys. But guess what? I love wooden toys. I love them becuase they are classic, high quality, have character, and they are just plain cute. So judge me all you want, lol… I’ll still love them all the more.
Shopping for wooden toys at the thrift store, is probably one of the easiest things to do. I almost always see cute, wooden toys on the shelves. Being a mama to two little boys makes it all the more easier to buy those adorable wooden cars and trucks and take them home to be loved and played with.
5. Baskets
Thrifting baskets is one of my favorite ways to make organization look cozy and pretty. I have grown to despise plastic organization totes, and find that a simple large, thrifted basket takes your boring old closet to another level. I especially love the Longaberger baskets. They can be pretty pricey but sometimes you can score them for under $5 at a thrift store.
6. Brass Candlesticks (one of my top favorite thrift store finds)
Hunting for old, brass candlesticks can be tricky when shopping at thrift stores. Most of the time you’ll see the tacky, yellow fake brass, and I personally am not a fan of that. I hunt for old, worn brass that has all the character. Some people like to shine theirs, I never do. The old tarnished color makes my old lady heart happy.
7. Vintage Art
Vintage art is always one of my favorite thrift store finds! I love to browse the framed art section for the longest time. I’m always scared I will miss a gorgeous barn print or a vintage needlepoint. I am the type who will spend hours in a thrift store, and perusing the framed art section is a must if you want to find those perfect vintage pieces.
Well those are all of my top 7 favorite thrift store finds! I really hope you enjoyed reading this post and gained some ideas of things you can add to your list next time you are out thrifting!
