Today I’m going to share some quick and easy tips to get rid of clutter fast, throughout your home. If you are like me, and find that clutter stresses you out, then this post is for you.
Have you ever walked into someone’s home for the first time, and quickly noticed how much stuff they have, whether its furniture, baby items, toys, clutter, etc…? Clutter can be a pretty overwhelming thing to alot of people, even if you aren’t a minimalist. In this post I’m going to share with you my top five tips on how to get rid of clutter fast, and how to stay on top of it.
1. Layer by Layer
Decluttering layer by layer keeps everything pretty simple and a little less daunting, when it comes to decluttering. Starting with one certain topic first, for example: kitchenware, clothes, shoes, pillows, books, papers, jackets, etc… Selecting a few things at a time and finding homes for them, or getting rid of them, can help remove some of the overwhelm of stuff everywhere. This is probably my number one tip on how to get rid of clutter fast. It keeps it very simple and quick, especially if you don’t have a lot of time throughout your day.
2. Save the Cleaning for Later
A lot of times when I find myself needing to declutter, I feel like I have to clean the room first or tidy up before I get started. On a perfect day this would be nice. However, if you have busy days, and little children like me, this isn’t going to make things faster. So save the cleaning for another day, and get to decluttering.
3. Don’t Think Twice
So many times we over think decluttering. For a lot of people, the idea of having to make decisions over stuff, is very stressful and overwhelming. One big tip I have, on how to get rid of clutter fast, is to stop thinking twice about it. Don’t ask yourself questions that will make you want to keep the item, for example… “What if I need this one day?” Do you really think after two years of owning it and never using it, you will need it one day? Or guilt ridden questions like… “Didn’t my cousin give this to me? Maybe I should keep it, I don’t want to hurt their feelings.” These type of unwanted guilt pressuring thoughts and questions, cause so many people to hoard belongings.
4. Use a Black Trash Bag
If you wanna know how to get rid of clutter fast, use a black trash bag. I remember when I was younger, my mom would help us clean and declutter our rooms. She always brought along a black trash bag, and now I know why… you can’t see what’s inside it. I think having something concealable to discard items into, makes a huge difference when decluttering. If you can’t see inside the bag, you won’t be tempted to go through and decide to keep things, and it will also keep your children’s curious little eyes from seeing what their mom decided needs to go.
5. Remove It From Your House
After you’ve finished decluttering, remove the evidence from your home. I usually like to take everything out to the trunk of our car. That way its ready to drop off at the donation center next time I’m running errands. Removing the stuff you’ve decluttered from your home, is what completes this process and actually makes all the difference. If you have all of your donations lying around your house, you haven’t really done the job right, and now have piles of junk lying around, and no one wants that.
