Instilling a Love for Reading at a Young Age
Owning an avid library of beautifully illustrated children’s books, is a huge goal of mine as a mama! Additionally, I want to instill in my children a love for reading and studying books at a young age. A few ways I love to keep our reading stack fresh and inviting, is by adding new titles every month. Hitting up thrift stores, yard sales, used book stores, are a few ways I love to curate a beautiful and vibrant picture book library for my little guys. Furthermore, I am excited to share with you 10 children’s picture books we love!

Picture Book #1: Bunny My Honey by Anita Jeram
This wonderful book my two year old loves! Anita does such a beautiful job illustrating her books! Surprisingly, she is also the illustrator of Guess How Much I Love You. Bunny My Honey is a baby bunny who goes off on his own exploring, only to realize he is lost and finds himself crying out for his mommy. The mommy rabbit shouts “Bunny My Honey, Bunny My Honey” until they are both reunited. Such a sweet, quick read that any toddler will fall in love with. This is probably our number one favorite out of the 10 children’s picture books that we love!

Picture Book #2: The Money Tree by Sarah Stewart
The Money Tree is a beautifully illustrated book written by Sarah Stewart, illustrated by David Small. This book starts off with a woman noticing an odd, snow covered mound in her yard. As the seasons go on, slowly a large tree begins to reveal itself. It surprisingly sprouts money instead of leaves, the woman constantly notices neighbors and strangers picking the money day and night. In the end, the woman never shows an ounce of greed or love towards the money. The tree dies off come fall, and the money begins to yellow. The people are no longer able to pick the money. The woman goes on with her life enjoying the simple things that keep her warm and safe during the seasons. This book exemplifies that money doesn’t trully grow on trees and doesn’t buy you everything.

Picture Book #3: Miss Maple’s Seeds By Eliza Wheeler
Miss Maple’s Seeds is a definite favorite around here! With the cutest illustrations, your little one will fall in love with this little story. In this book, you’ll find lovely Miss Maple and her love for caring for and cleaning all the orphaned seeds. Come spring she will prepare the seeds for the new journey of growth and send them off on their new adventure.

Picture Book #4: Maple by Lori Nichols
Such a sweet little story about a little girl named Maple who is named after a sapling Maple tree planted in her honor. As the little girl grows up, so does the Maple tree. Maple tries to bring her tree toys, scarves to keep warm, etc… and then learns that her tree doesn’t need those things to grow. Instead Maple learns to dance when the tree dances in the wind, rest under the tree on hot summer days, etc… In the end, Maple learns of her new baby sister, and a sapling Willow tree is planted in her name, right beside the Maple tree.

Picture Book #5: Corduroy by Don Freeman
Corduroy, a well loved popular children’s book. Many of us grew up being read this adorable little story about a bear who lives in a department store. Only to find he lost a button, thinking that no one would want him without it. He begins to find his missing button. By the end of the story, a little girl falls in love with the little button-less bear and takes him home to love and care for.

Picture Book #6: My First Little House Books
My First Little House Books, are such a cute little series that have been shortened into a children’s book series. Which is based off of the actual Little House on the Prairie series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This little picture book series has the cutest illustrations and will capture any little boy or girls attention. If you grew up reading the Little House series, then you will enjoy reading your little ones these sweet books.

Picture Book #7: Little Bear’s Friend by Else Holmelund Minarik
As a 90’s baby, I remember watching the Little Bear cartoons on PBS every Saturday. I loved this little series, and we have loved reading Noble the books series as well. With wholesome and old fashioned tales and illustrations any little boy or girl will adore these! Even the chapter books are fillled with with adorbale little illustrations.

Picture Book #8: Curious George’s Dinosaur Discovery by Margret & H.A. Reys
Curious George books are some of our favorites around here. We love just about any version or story on Curious George, and one that we love currently is Curious George’s Dinosaur Discovery. With a toddler boy who has a love for dinosaurs as much as the next little boy, this little story is a great one to add to your collection.

Picture Book #9: Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers
When I first stumbled upon books illustrated by Marla Frazee, I discovered the book Everywhere Babies. We have fallen in love with it! Therefore, I couldn’t leave it out of the stack of 10 children’s books we love. Such a sweet little book with adorable illustrations about little babies, and the stages they go through.

Picture Book #10: Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman
Another beautifully illustrated book by Marla Frazee written by Mary Ann Hoberman. We adore this little picture book about seven picky children who all require a certain food. Their mother tirelessly makes each meal individually to make each child happy. Furthermore, the end of the story, an unexpected cooking incident occurs. Surprisingly, all the childrens meals have been turned into one giant cake which becomes the family’s perfect meal.
